All entries were from one of the following 14 western states:
Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana,
Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and
Wyoming.

Entries in the following five categories were judged on
overall quality, community participation and how well they
adhered to the Ahwahnee Principles.

|
|
Included commercial, residential, mixed-use, downtown,
infill, street improvement, public space, open space, trails,
retrofit/historic rehabilitation and/or adaptive reuse projects.
|
|
|
|
|
Included policies, programs and guidelines adopted by a
government agency. Examples: transit-oriented guidelines,
shared parking policies, design guidelines, neighborhood
services programs, and incentives for infill and mixed use.
|
|
|
|
|
Included general, comprehensive, specific, neighborhood,
and strategic plans.
|
|
|
|
|
Included community participation efforts, public education
programs, plans and/or programs for revitalizing existing
neighborhoods, mechanisms for strengthening neighborhoods
through increased citizen involvement, festivals, community
events, and the use of technology to reach the public.

|
|
|
Included regional plans and/or techniques for preserving
agriculture or open space, plans to accommodate new growth
(infill or new towns), plans for linking communities through
transit, and regional coordination and visioning efforts.
