The Local Government Commission's Center for Livable Communities, the Bank of America, the American Institute of Architects, California Council and the California Chapter of the American Planning Association hosted the 2001-2002 Ahwahnee Awards to recognize exemplary projects that further the creation of more livable, pedestrian-oriented and transit-based communities throughout the 14 western US states. Named in honor of the Ahwahnee Principles, the awards program recognized projects and programs that create a better quality of life for residents and for the region as a whole. First presented in 1991, at Yosemite National Park's Ahwahnee Hotel, the Ahwahnee Principles represent a set of planning concepts and implementation measures aimed at planning and building more livable communities: places that are economically and socially vibrant with a healthy natural environment and a good quality of life for all residents. The Ahwahnee Principles call for communities with a diverse and balanced mix of housing, jobs, businesses and recreational activities located within easy walking distance of one another. When and Where The 2001 - 2002 Ahwahnee Awards program was held in conjunction with the "New Partners for Smart Growth: Building Safe, Healthy and Livable Communities" conference on January 24-26, 2002 at the US Grant Hotel in San Diego. The conference was organized by the Local Government Commission and Penn State University, with support from the US EPA, the Smart Growth Network, US EPA Region IX, National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Federal Highway Administration's TCSP Program, the National Association of Realtors, and Caltrans. The conference further advanced the discussion on smart growth issues, while continuing the theme of implementing a multidisciplinary approach to building safe, healthy and livable communities.
