The
only winner in this category, the Solana
Neighborhood Center: A Model for Growth Without Sprawl
was submitted by Sakal and Hood Architecture and Urban
Design in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This project was initially
envisioned by city planning staff as an infill prototype
for a transit-oriented neighborhood center. It evolved
into a highly detailed and carefully thought-out antidote
to sprawl. The Solana Neighborhood Study echoes many of
the proposals contained in the Ahwahnee Principles by
calling for infill development and the creation of complete,
integrated and interconnected, mixed-use neighborhoods.
