The past few years have seen the expansion of the movement to create livable communities through smart, well-planned development that protects open space and farmland, revitalizes communities, keeps housing affordable and provides more transportation choices. The director of the nation’s leading smart growth organization describes the natural partnership that is being forged between advocates for good community design and planning practices and public health professionals working to create active, healthy communities.

10:00am – Concurrent Morning Breakout Sessions

Youth on the Move — Encouraging Active Living Among the Next Generation (Executive Room B)

The alarming increase in the rates of obesity among our nation’s youth combined with declining levels of physical activity are prompting public health professionals to focus special attention on the next generation. Learn about some of the efforts in Colorado to get youth moving again.

  • Jessica Sherwood, Director, Feet First (moderator/presenter)
  • Dan Grunig, Director, Bicycle Colorado
  • Dave Wann, Co-author, Superbia!

Making Communities More Walkable and Livable by Getting the Street Design Standards Right (Room 827)

While residents argue for safe, quiet, and livable streets, many communities still have design standards that call for overly wide streets that encourage speeding and discourage walking or bicycling. Speakers will describe efforts underway in Colorado and other parts of the country to revise the standards to build streets that are safe for all users.

  • Garner Stoll, Community Development Director, Town of Parker (moderator/presenter)
  • Dan Burden, Executive Director, Walkable Communities
  • Scott Hobson, Senior Planner, City of Pueblo

Getting the Message Out — Promoting Active Living Policies and Programs (Room 927)

Public health professionals helping to build an active living movement understand that it’s not only about bricks and mortar but also about winning the hearts and minds of the American public. Learn about policies and programs that get the active living message out at the public policy, community and individual levels.

  • Helen Thompson, Program/Research Liaison, UCHSC, America on the Move (moderator/presenter)
  • Eric Bergman, Director, Office of Smart Growth, State of Colorado
  • Molly Hanson, Community Health Specialist, Boulder County Public Health

Mixed Use Neighborhoods — Creating Safe, Vibrant Communities (Crystal II)

Policymakers, planners and residents often agree that the key to creating safe, active and vibrant communities is to design more compact neighborhoods with a mix of uses and nearby destinations. The challenge is how to overcome decades of single-use zoning codes and institutional barriers that prevent this type of development from taking place. Speakers from the public sector, the development community and the non-profit sector will describe recent progress on this front.

  • Paul Zykofsky, Program Director, Local Government Commission (moderator/presenter)
  • Peter Park, Community Planning Manager, City and County of Denver
  • Will Fleissig, Principal, Continuum Partners

Colorado is a state with a strong ethic of outdoor recreation and a physically active lifestyle. While we’re not immune to the national trends of increased rates of obesity and declining physical activity we are well positioned to reverse these trends before they get any worse. A key first step is to develop a strategy for building a statewide movement for active living. This brainstorming session – and the discussions and activities that will follow in the weeks and months ahead – are designed to help kick the movement off.

His work with communities (over 1,500 to date) often focuses on fixing or completing the street – the public realm in most American towns and cities – by making sure that it accommodates not just motor vehicles but also pedestrians and bicyclists and children, seniors, and people of all abilities.
