Emergency Response, Traffic Calming, and Traditional Neighborhood Streets Workshop

Date: July 12, 2004, Petaluma, CA

This one-day workshop included a presentation by Dan Burden of Walkable Communities, Inc. to inform city planners, traffic engineers, city managers, elected officials, fire marshals, and other emergency responders about traffic calming and traditional neighborhood street design. Mr. Burden described the art and science of neighborhood planning and traffic management, showing how well-conceived traffic calming techniques and narrower street design can accommodate the needs of emergency responders while creating safe and livable neighborhoods.

About Dan Burden
Dan Burden is a nationally recognized authority on pedestrian, bicycle and traffic calming facilities and programs with over 30 years of experience developing, promoting and evaluating walkable and bicycle-friendly community design. He is a founder of the Bicycle Federation of America and director of Walkable Communities, Inc. Dan is author of Street Design Guidelines for Healthy Neighborhoods and Streets and Sidewalks, People and Cars: A Citizen’s Guide to Traffic Calming
