MEDIA ADVISORY
The Local Government Commission is hosting a statewide, multi-disciplinary smart growth conference that will address the impacts of California's expected population growth in the near future - including additional pressure on our water supplies, agricultural land, open space, air quality, housing supplies, transportation systems, energy supplies - and the public health and safety of our communities. The "Planning and Building More Livable Communities" conference will be held June 27-28 and the U.S. Grant Hotel in San Diego.
Smart growth and livable community strategies have received national prominence because of their effectiveness in creating compact, walkable development, addressing traffic congestion, improving air quality, preserving open space, conserving energy and water. The way we design our communities has also been linked to other challenges facing our communities, including public health, crime rates, public safety, economic vitality and mobility for seniors, children and low-income residents.
At this conference, participants and speakers will examine the barriers to working across disciplines, and discuss how the implementation of smart growth principles can provide effective, long-term solutions to many of the environmental, economic, social and public health challenges California is facing.
Conference Sponsors include: the California Department of Health Services, California Department of Transportation, Irvine Foundation, Southern California Gas Company, U.S. EPA Region IX Office, Lewis Operating Corp. and the U.C. Berkeley Traffic Safety Center.
We look forward to your attendance at the conference.
