The LGC's 21st Annual Conference for Elected Officials

Bringing Schools to the Community & Community
to the Schools
A Conference for School Boardmembers, City Councilmembers and
County Supervisors
Dates: September 22 24, 2000
Location: Stanford Sierra Conference Center,
South Lake Tahoe, CA
Presented by the Local Government Commission and
the Foundation Consortium
Cosponsored by the CCS Partnership
Public schools can be an integral cornerstone of
every community, one that connects all citizens within the neighborhood,
celebrates diversity and promotes understanding. They can be a place
where the human spirit is nurtured and where each individual is
helped to develop to his or her highest potential.
There is often a need for better communication
and cooperation between school boardmembers and the city and county
elected officials who serve the same community. At the same time,
funds are tighter for all local governments. This conference allowed
city councilmembers, mayors, county supervisors, and school boardmembers
to identify how to bring community to the schools and schools to
the community.
On the Program
Participants heard case studies of successful, multi-use neighborhood
schools that happened because cities, counties and the schools worked
together. Participants learned how to measure the results of such
efforts and discuss their political realities.
Sessions offered local government officials opportunities
to identify and to share strategies for successful collaboration.
State legislators were present to hear participant comments and
take action where state legislation is needed.
Bringing the Kids
An advisory committee of children (ages 13-17) attended the
conference and actively participated in a panel discussion. The
advisory committee developed a set of recommendations that were
going to be presented to their school districts and local governments.
