Managing Growth in California:
Ballot-Box Planning and Other Tools and Techniques
In the next 40 years California's population is expected to grow
by 24 million, the equivalent of adding the current population of
the states of Texas and New York. Even conservative projections
anticipate a significant increase in our state's population for
the foreseeable future. Over 65% of the growth in population will
be the result of natural increase, not immigration from abroad or
other states. How we shape and manage that growth will be crucial
to the future livability of our communities and our regions.
This workshop examined the different techniques for managing growth
- ranging from urban growth boundaries to caps on housing construction
to infrastructure requirements - as well as the ways in which they
are implemented.
