Like the rest of the state, Southern California's population continues
to grow at a rapid pace, despite the recent economic slowdown. The
Los Angeles region alone will add another 6 million people in a
28 year period (1997-2025). Much of this growth will be the result
of natural increase, not immigration.
How will this growth affect the livability of our communities?
What impact will it have on transportation, jobs and housing?
California's housing demand will exceed 220,000 units a year during
the next two decades. Home-building isn't keeping pace with that
demand, however, and the situation with affordable housing is even
more drastic. The California
Department of Housing and Community Development estimates a
staggering unmet need for 3.7 million low-income units by 2020.
This workshop series reviewed and highlighted current demographic
and growth forecasts for the area, and highlighted how compact,
mixed-use, infill development can address this housing need while
helping to revitalize our communities.
