Building Livable Communities:
Making the Connections
This Year's Theme
This year - the tenth anniversary of the Ahwahnee
Principles - we will explore how local leaders are connecting
neighborhoods to one another and connecting cities within their
regions. We will carry out a discourse with the director of planning
for the state to explore how we might all connect to develop a
unified strategy for growth in California.
Saturday evening will feature a special celebration
of the birth of the Ahwahnee Principles - as those who were present
at that groundbreaking event in 1991 return to tell us how they
implemented the Principles, changing business-as-usual land use
in their communities.
Featured Speakers
Peter Calthorpe, one of the architects of the
Ahwahnee Principles - Rick Cole, City Manager of Azusa, and formerly
the Mayor of Pasadena - Steve Niessen, Director of the Governor's
Office of Planning and Research - Michael Sweeney, former Mayor
of Hayward, now Under Secretary of the Resources Agency, and many
more!
Conference Schedule
This conference has sold out each year because
attendees say the format is uniquely structured to combine fresh
new ideas with hands-on discussion of how to implement them. The
main conference program begins at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 16th,
and continues through Noon on Sunday. We encourage you to bring
your family, attend the pre-conference session on Thursday evening,
and use the session breaks to ski, hike, skate, or just enjoy
the breathtaking beauty of Yosemite in the winter.
