Asilomar Forum Focuses on Energy
On September 7-9th, the Local Government Commissions 22nd
annual conference for elected officials at Asilomar will focus on
local government actions to improve the long-term energy future
of our communities and our state. By then we will have weathered
what may be perhaps our most challenging summer in a long time.
We have invited David Freeman, formerly of SMUD and LADWP and currently
serving as the Governors Senior Energy Advisor, to close the
conference. David continues to inspire us with his message that
conservation and clean renewable energy are key to getting us through
this crisis and building a sustainable energy future.
David Morris, of the Institute for Local Self Reliance, will provide
his perspective on what happened, and more importantly what we can
do to protect our economy and quality of life. Morris latest
book is Seeing the Light ® Regaining Control our Electricity
System.
We will also get an update on local government actions resulting
from our effort with the League of California Cities, California
State Association of Counties, and California Park and Recreation
Society to conserve electricity this summer while strengthening
our communities through our joint effort, Watts Going On,
California? (See the related June 2001 article in Currents
for how to get involved).
Commissioners from the California Energy Commission and California
Public Utilities Commission will update us on the current energy
situation and the programs they sponsor to help local governments.
There will be sessions on funding for energy projects, empowering
local communities, improving efficiency in new and existing development,
and developing renewable energy resources. Keith Rutledge of the
Renewable Energy Development Institute will provide insight into
financing renewable energy systems, often the biggest stumbling
block.
