Congratulations, California!

The California Energy Commission recently announced that California’s conservation efforts reduced electricity consumption by 12% in June 2001 over the same period last year. Peak demand was cut an unprecedented 14%, helping to protect the state from rotating blackouts and expensive energy purchases. In June 2000, six Stage 1 and three Stage 2 emergencies were declared by the ISO when electricity demand exceeded the 40,000 megawatt threshold. This June, conservation efforts were enough to avoid any ISO emergency declarations, although temperatures were much warmer than last year.

“Californians are doing a phenomenal job of conserving energy,” Governor Gray Davis said. “I asked Californians to reduce electricity usage by 10 percent and they have come through big time.”

For a complete breakdown of the June conservation numbers, visit the California Energy Commission web site at http://www.energy.ca.gov/electricity (click on “2001 Peak Demand Reduction”).
