LGC Becomes Rebuild America Partner
The Local Government Commission is one of Rebuild Americas
newest partners. Rebuild America, a program of the U.S. Department
of Energy (DOE) that focuses on energy-savings solutions as community
solutions, began in 1994 with the mission to accelerate energy-efficiency
improvements in existing commercial, institutional and multifamily
residential buildings through private-public partnerships created
at the community level.
Today Rebuild America is helping communities across the country
to sort though an often overwhelming array of options for building
improvements as well as assisting in the development and implementation
of an action plan that meet their needs.
Working on a local level, Rebuild America helps community organizations
access innovative technologies, industry services, customized assistance,
and a variety of business and technical tools needed to perform
energy retrofit on buildings. The program focuses on five building
sectors: K-12 schools, colleges and universities, state and local
governments, public and multifamily housing, and commercial buildings.
Rebuild America can help communities that want to;
- Reduce energy expenditures
- Retrofit existing buildings
- Build new facilities
- Preserve and upgrade historic buildings
- Stimulate economic development
- Provide energy-efficient affordable housing
Rebuild America facilitates connections between community partnerships
that are working on the same issues, with businesses that provide
efficient products and services, with technical tools that can help
expedite a project, and with information on energy audits, financing
strategies and energy-efficient technologies.
Rebuild America focuses on more than buildings. It also encompasses
a variety of issues such as transportation, economic and community
development, urban sprawl, and sustainability.
Rebuild America partners with small towns, large metropolitan areas
and Native American tribes, creating a large network of peers. Rebuild
America supports communities with access to DOE regional offices,
state and territory energy offices, national laboratories, utilities,
colleges and universities, and nonprofit agencies.
This network of partnerships can help communities be more environmentally
and economically sound through smarter energy use.
