Asilomar: Invest for California
In light of the recent state infrastructure report on Strategic
Planning for Californias Future Prosperity and Quality of
Life, this years annual Local Government Commission conference
at Asilomar (September 13-15) will be Investing for California.
The report is the result of a two-year effort of the Davis Administrations
Commission on Building for the 21st Century. The commissioners were
drawn from a wide group, including Steve Szalay, Executive Director
of the California State Association of Counties; William Hauck of
the California Business Roundtable; State Treasurer Phil Angelides;
Mike Paparian formerly with the Sierra Club and now an Integrated
Waste Management Board member; and 44 others representing such diverse
interests as labor and the development community.
This groundbreaking documents vision for California is surprisingly
consistent with the LGCs Ahwahnee Principles for Livable Communities
and Principles for Economic Development. The report looks at all
aspects of infrastructure including energy, transportation, schools,
housing, land use, technology, public facilities and water. It sets
a 25% goal for meeting our future energy needs through conservation
and renewable energy resources.
The reports integrated view of infrastructure rather than
focusing on one issue at a time is also visionary. For example,
it says that housing should be energy-efficient, affordable and
close to transportation ® Our thinking must be as integrated
as our lives.
The Asilomar conference for local elected officials presents a
rare opportunity for LGC members to network and build relationships
with key state leaders in a relaxed and intimate setting. Numerous
follow up activities have grown out of the relationships built at
our previous Asilomar gatherings.
