An Energy Newsletter for Local Governments
In late May, the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) enrolled the first participant in the Local Government Energy Partnership (LGEP) program. LGEP is assisting the City of Pleasanton to develop an Energy Element as part of its General Plan update, as well as providing an assessment of energy use in the City's facilities. In the next two months, LGEP expects to initiate energy-related technical and policy assistance to seven additional local governments who have expressed an interest in participating in LGEP. Ultimately, the program plans to provide at least 35 local governments with free services before the program ends on December 31, 2005.
LGEP's objectives are to achieve energy and cost savings by improving energy efficiency in public facilities and the larger community. The program is funded by California energy utility ratepayers under the auspices of the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). Cities (with populations under 250,000), counties, and special districts in the ABAG and Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments (AMBAG) membership areas are eligible to apply for program services (with the exception of Marin County).
