Local Government Energy Partnership Delivers Valuable Services to Resource-Strapped Agencies

By the end of 2005, the current Local Government Energy Partnership (LGEP) Program will have assisted 35 small and medium-sized local governments in achieving energy and cost savings by 1) implementing energy efficiency projects in public facilities, and 2) helping local governments create community-wide energy savings through energy policies and programs. The 32 agencies now enrolled are benefiting from a portfolio of free services that allow them to:

  • become better informed of the energy efficiency potential within their agency,
  • obtain the necessary tools and services to develop cost-effective, energy efficiency projects, and
  • access necessary funding, incentives and rebates in order to complete cost-saving projects.

LGEP has provided services ranging from conducting free facility energy audits to developing guidance documents on water and energy conservation policies. For more information about LGEP and a list of current enrollees, visit the LGEP website at http://www.abag.ca.gov/lgep.

LGEP has also received initial acceptance as a Pacific Gas and Electric Company local government partnership program for 2006-08. The program expects to continue to work with current enrollees into the next program cycle, as well as add new participants to the program.

The program is funded by California energy utility ratepayers under the auspices of the California Public Utilities Commission. Cities (with populations under 250,000), counties, and special districts in the membership areas of the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) and Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments (AMBAG) are eligible to apply for program services. (While local governments within Marin County are not eligible for LGEP, they can access similar services through the County-administered Marin Energy Management Team.) The LGEP Program Manager is Gerald Lahr (510-464-7908 or jerryl@abag.ca.gov).
