Presentation for Local Government

Affordable, reliable energy services for attractive, homes and productive commercial and institutional buildings are a prerequisite for a successful, competitive city. If we were starting from scratch, the ideal municipal energy system would be systematically designed to serve buildings and transit systems to use the least amount of energy needed to deliver the desired energy services, supplied by a blend of regional and local energy supply systems that would convert primary fuels to lighting, heating, cooling, with the least waste.

An approach like this has the potential to halve average energy use, reduce peak demands, slash greenhouse gas levels to even less than half average, to improve the returns on energy supply assets and enhance the market value of the property. By its nature, an integrated approach needs a rethink of

the municipal regulatory and market structures. Integrated municipal services, teamed with the regional gas and electricity networks, is an approach well established in many Scandinavian, German and other European cities. Peter Garforth will explain how this integrated supply/demand planning is currently managed in selected European cities, show how new developments can be designed to sharply reduce marginal energy demand, and discuss some of the benefits.
