What’s New with Cool Roofs?

As this year’s roofing season is winding down, several new developments are brewing with the State’s Cool Savings Program (CSP) including a residential tile roof program and workshops for roofing industry representatives.

Residential Tile Roofs

The majority of cool roof products and installations in California have been for flat commercial roofs. That may soon change. CSP staff, working with a ceramic tile manufacturer, will be bringing the program to new residential developments. Several ceramic tiles already qualify as cool roof products under the program. The manufacturer will be working with its pigment supplier to develop a broader range of colors that meet the CSP requirements, including the currently popular darker tiles, and will aggregate the rebate applications to cut down CSP program administration costs. Look for an update in the next issue of Currents once all the details have been ironed out.

Cool Roof Trainings

CSP staff is also working with the National Roofing Contractors Association’s Roofing Industry Educational Institute (RIEI) to provide trainings for roofing industry personnel to acquaint them with the benefits of cool roofs and the CSP program requirements. RIEI has over 20 years of working with the roofing industry with trainings on technical advances. The trainings will take place in San Ramon (11/27) and Downey (11/28 and 29), and be repeated next spring. Visit our web site for more details.

Need More Information?

LGC will be staffing a booth at the California State Association of Counties and League of California Cities conferences this year and can answer your cool roof questions there. CSAC’s conference runs from November 27-30, and the League’s is from December 18-20. Both will be in Sacramento.

If you can’t wait until then, call (888) 891-COOL or visit our web site at http://www.lgc.org/coolroofs/.
