Dont Stop Conserving
Californians did a great job this summer to conserve electricity
which helped to avoid the predicted 34 days of rolling blackouts
most experts had forecasted. But now is not the time to stop our
conservation efforts remember last winter when the blackouts
started.
Winter is traditionally not a time of electricity scarcity in California,
but a time when power plants are shut down for maintenance, and
in the past, electricity has been exported to other, colder regions
of the West. While the California Independent System Operator (ISO)
is not predicting electricity shortages, it warns that an unplanned
plant shutdown on a high-demand day could stress the system, and
emphasizes the need for continued electricity conservation.
The Local Government Commission, the League of California Cities,
California State Association of Counties, and the California Park
and Recreation Society put together the "Watts Going
On, California?" campaign last spring to encourage and provide
ideas to local governments for reducing community energy use. The
guidebook also includes ideas for winter conservation, and is available
