An Energy Newsletter for Local Governments

New Partners for Smart Growth, Albuquerque, Jan 22-24, 2009

This national, multi-disciplinary, smart growth conference is coming to Albuquerque, NM, January 22-24, 2009. The conference program has over 100 diverse sessions spanning three full days. While many sessions will explore new trends and technical details, there are also sessions for those who are new to smart growth. The program includes 11 optional tours of model projects - another great way to "see" a slice of the Southwest.

As the movement to act on climate change has reached a tipping point, the conference features an entire track of sessions on the topic, including the latest in smart growth tools, strategies and policies local governments are using to reducing greenhouse gases and their environmental impacts, and what the youth of today see as their role in implementing solutions to this worldwide challenge. Other sessions will make the connections between the economy, climate change, public health and smart growth.

Hear the latest success stories on TOD, green building and energy best practices, water resource sustainability, and effective solutions for affordable housing and open space, street design, and mobility needs. The event also includes many sessions that explore the role of health professionals in influencing community design to help create healthy live, work and play environments in local communities.

Two conference sessions will highlight California local government energy activities. The first will have presentations from Marin County, Ventura County Regional Energy Alliance and ICLEI on reducing carbon footprints through renewable energy and energy efficiency. The other will focus on community-sponsored energy financing districts featuring Berkeley’s Financing Initiative for Renewable and Solar Technology (FIRST) and Dubuque, Iowa’s Warehouse District Energy Efficiency Zone.

The LGC expects most of the conference sessions to be approved for AICP accreditation by the American Planning Association. Information as to which sessions will be accredited will be posted online by early December.

Register online now, and before the January 9th deadline. Don't wait until after the holidays to get registered or make your hotel reservations. The special room rate of $99 is only available until December 30th and we expect both the Hyatt and the DoubleTree hotels to sell out.
