Sonoma County Sets National Precedent for Climate Protection
One by one over the last year, each of Sonoma's nine cities and
the County have pledged to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
In doing so, they set a national precedent. For the first time,
100 percent of an area's local governments have committed to protect
the climate.
Support for the campaign in Sonoma County was nearly unanimous.
Of the approximately 50 votes cast by elected officials for climate
protection resolutions, only three were "no" votes.
This endeavor is part of the International Council of Local Environmental
Initiatives' campaign in which over 530 municipalities worldwide,
135 of them in the U.S., participate. Besides eliminating millions
of tons of Earth-warming gases from the atmosphere, participating
governments save money and build more livable communities. Organizers
envision that by the end of 2003 there will be at least 300 US local
governments participating in the campaign.
