2002 Tree Planting and Capacity-Building Grants Report
For the last decade California
ReLeaf has administered two annual urban forestry grant programs for the California Department of Forestry
and Fire Protection. 2002-Year recipients span the state from Modoc to San Diego County.
With more than 8,500 volunteer hours to plant over 1,800 grant-funded trees, 27 groups completed Tree Planting Grant Program projects at
an average cost of $49.50 per tree. Grant funds were used to purchase trees, stakes, ties, soil amendments where needed, and to cover a portion
of the costs of publicity and educational efforts related to the grant projects. Municipalities, nurseries and individuals donated additional
trees to the projects. Total grant funding was $89,364.
Grants for capacity-building totaled $129,373 and were given to 25 community groups that leveraged the funds to increase public awareness
about Californias urban forests, provide tree care and strengthen volunteer development. 3,365 volunteers contributed more than 11,500
hours planting and caring for trees, creating publications, and informing students, homeowners, businesses and green industry members about
different aspects of the urban forest. Over $233,000 in donated goods and services, volunteer time and cash contributions were raised as
