PLACES: Reedley Christens Rails to Trails

In October, the City of Reedley held the grand opening of their Rails to Trails project. The beautifully landscaped two-mile trail provides pedestrians, bicyclists and roller bladers with a direct route from downtown to the high school and Reedley Community College.

The City is now preparing a specific plan for redeveloping vacant and underutilized industrial buildings and fruit packing facilities along the trail to a mix of retail and service commercial shops, dining/ entertainment businesses, professional offices and housing, including senior housing. These uses are intended to complement the adjacent downtown area and will be accessible from the trail.

Reedley Bike TrailPhase II of the project will extend the trail to the city’s agricultural packing plants, offering workers a safe, pleasing and pollution-free commute.

Councilmember and trail supporter Marge Gobby is ecstatic about the new trail. “People love the trail, and it’s creating even more excitement about our downtown.” Gobby added that she sees the trail as an integral part of Reedley’s economic future. “We understand that to attract creative entrepreneurs you need to create a place with a distinct community character instead one of countless strip malls and faceless subdivisions.” The City’s long-range plan is that the trail will ring the entire town.
