PLANS: Preserving Valley Farmland
The
City of Escalon is using state and federal grants to preserve
agricultural land and fight encroaching sprawl. The City received
permission from the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors to
purchase the development rights on 70 acres of farmland adjacent
to its sphere of influence to maintain the land in agricultural
production.
The Fresno County Board of Supervisors approved a new general
plan that will guide 93% of new growth to existing cities to conserve
farmland. The general plan also encourages compact development
and curbs rural residential lots to help preserve the countys
$3.53 billion agricultural economy.
