PLACES: Turlock Boosts Their Downtown Economy
Last year, the City of Turlock moved its city hall into a historic
downtown building, a decision triggered by the police stations
need to expand, which was impossible in the old location. Bringing
City Hall downtown provided needed space for the police department,
put an empty downtown building to new use, and added vitality to
the commercial district.
So many things have happened since City Hall moved downtown,
says Sharon Silva, executive director of the Turlock Downtown Association.
People who were renting retail space are now buying and the
vacancy rate, once 20%, is now down to 4%.
