Summer 2001
PLACES: Manteca Trail Grabs State Award
The
California Transportation Foundation honored the City of Manteca
with a 2001 Tranny Award for the Tidewater Bikeway
at a May ceremony at the Sacramento Convention Center.
The City transformed a barren, former railroad right-of-way into
a scenic greenbelt, complete with plazas that include benches,
water fountains, information kiosks and lighting.
A scenic link between the cities of Manteca and Lathrop, the
Tidewater Bikeway encompasses a 3.5-mile bicycle and pedestrian
trail through a 35-acre urban greenbelt running from the heart
of Manteca to Spreckels Avenue.
The project changed what was once an east-west barrier into a
connection between neighborhoods and the downtown area. The bicycle
trail includes a four-foot wide granite-jogging path. The City
planted 1,000 trees adjacent to the trail and installed 911 call
boxes every two miles for added safety.
The trail was initiated and approved 10 years ago to purchase
the old Tidewater Southern Railway line and right-of-way from
Union Pacific.
I really admire the vision of the council and staff at
that time. Their perseverance has paid off with an award-winning
facility for all of Manteca to enjoy, said Councilmember
John W. Harris.
The bikeway construction cost $1.7 million, coming from federal,
state and local sources. Measure K, the local half-cent transportation
sales tax program, kicked in $250,000 of the construction cost.
