Summer 2001
PLANS: Bakersfield Visions Downtown in 2020
More
than 135 residents and business leaders met with architects, planners
and local officials in a three-day community charrette to create
a vision for downtown Bakersfield.
The stimulus for the charrette was the development of the Greater
Bakersfield Vision 2020, a long-term vision and action plan prepared
by volunteers with the input of over 13,000 area residents. The
charrette developed some of the implementation tools and visualizations
that will help bring Vision 2020s aspirations to life.
Charrette
participants joined one of 11 groups. Each group had a central task
or area to address, including the canal corridor, education, financing,
and downtown housing.
Design concepts and recommendations included an expanded downtown
park with a lake surrounded by high density townhouses and further
development of the downtown alleyways as focal areas of pedestrian,
retail and entertainment activity.
