PLACES: Dinuba Plays for Revitalized Downtown
The
City of Dinuba is making its downtown an entertainment destination
and in doing so is revitalizing its downtown.
With help from economic development specialists Applied Development
Economics (ADE), the City developed a Downtown Entertainment Feasibility
Study. Focusing its entertainment energy in one area of the downtown,
the City renovated a closed-down bowling alley into a state-of-the-art
facility. New parking was also added. The City built a temporary
skate park providing youth with a safe, healthy place and increasing
the sales of a nearby grocery store across from the bowling center.
The City plans to build a family-entertainment park on the site
and a larger, permanent skate park on an adjacent parcel. It is
also soliciting proposals for a four-screen movie theater next
to the bowling center.
Smart growth is also a central component to Dinubas revitalization.
The City passed a Downtown Residential Overlay ordinance and is
in the process of seismically upgrading historic downtown buildings
to allow housing above ground-floor businesses. The City has also
implemented traffic calming and installed sidewalk furniture on
its downtown streets.
