Smart Growth Zoning Codes: A Resource Guide

The Local Government Commission’s Smart Growth Zoning Codes: A Resource Guide, will be available within weeks! Based on the LGC’s research of more than 150 “smart growth” zoning codes from across the nation, this guidebook will help planners design a zoning code that encourages the construction of walkable, mixed use neighborhoods and the revitalization of existing places.

Each chapter analyzes a critical issue ¨ such as design, streets and parking ¨ and highlights exemplary codes from across the country. The guidebook comes with a CD-ROM that contains copies of some of the best zoning codes in the United States, as well as other resources.

PPIC/GVC Central Valley Survey Now Available

The fourth edition of the Central Valley Survey, a collaborative effort of the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) and the Great Valley Center, was released on April 30, 2003. The survey is a special edition of the PPIC Statewide Survey, directed by Mark Baldassare, a Senior Fellow at PPIC, in consultation with the Great Valley Center.

The purpose of the surveys, began in 1999, is to “provide comprehensive, advocacy-free information on the opinions and public policy preferences of Central Valley residents.” Each year, a representative sample of the 19-county Central Valley is polled with a set of over 60 "benchmark" questions covering a range of issues.

According to the survey, growth-related issues and air pollution ranked highest on the list of issues facing the valley’s residents today. Many other interesting findings, including views on local and state government, water, transportation, taxes and the State budget crisis, can be found in the survey.

To download the full text of the survey, visit http://www.ppic.org/ or http://www.greatvalley.org/. For hard copies, contact the Great Valley Center at info@greatvalley.org.
