13th Annual Yosemite Conference, Building Livable Communities:
Show Me the Water! — Coming in March
The Local Government Commissions annual Yosemite Conference
for California local elected leaders is happening March 18-21.
As the conference title suggests, this years event will focus
on the land use/water connection, with an emphasis on how local
governments can help assure affordable water supplies for their
communities into the future. Attendees will hear how siting new
development in the right place and containing urban sprawl can
decrease municipal costs. Developers are included on the program
to explore how local officials can work with them to reduce the
cost of water supplies and water treatment.
While this years conference focuses primarily on development
issues relating to water, it will also feature an ideas that
work session allowing participants to exchange success stories
and strategies for making communities more livable.
This conference has sold out each year because attendees say the
location and format provides a setting where local policymakers
can roll up their sleeves in a relaxing environment and combine
fresh new ideas with hands-on discussion of how to implement them.

Central Valley On the Map!
Save the date for the Great Valley Centers annual conference,
May 5th and 6th in Sacramento.

Rail-Volution 2004: Call for Papers Announced
The annual Rail-Volution conference will take place in
Los Angeles, September 18-22, 2004. Citizen activists,
developers, business leaders, planners, local elected officials,
transit operators and federal and state officials are encouraged
to submit presentation topics to conference organizers.
Of particular interest are case studies of transit and
land use coalitions and partnerships; community revitalization;
streets and transit for place making; innovative uses of
flexible federal funds; public health relating to walkable,
transit-oriented communities; and successful examples of
incorporating affordable housing into TOD. Submittals are
due March 1, 2004.
