Transportation Tools to Improve Children's Health and Mobility
Our children's health and mobility are at risk. Thirty years ago,
66 percent of all children walked or bicycled to school. Shockingly,
today only 13 percent do! The "Transportation
Tools to Improve Children's Health and Mobility" fact sheet (PDF, 1.1 MB) has been designed especially for transportation professionals.
It contains eight pages of problem-solving methods and practical
solutions endorsed by transportation planners and traffic engineers
who have been conducting safe routes to school projects throughout
California. It focuses on alleviating transportation problems in
communities through a combination of education, enforcement and
engineering solutions. Page 7 of the fact sheet provides tips on
how to develop competitive grant proposals for Safe
Routes to School funding.

The fact sheet was developed by a group of professionals from throughout
the state, led by David Parisi, PE, an expert in traffic calming
and school area traffic safety. Mr. Parisi is leading the transportation
engineering efforts for Marin County's Safe Routes to Schools program
- a national pilot project sponsored by the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration. The fact sheet is co-sponsored by the California
Office of Traffic Safety, the Safe Routes to School Initiative at
the California Department of Health Services, and the Local Government
Commission (LGC).
