Waste Prevention Projects and Campaigns
Projects
Janitorial Products - Pollution Prevention
Project
Through a grant from the Environmental Protection
Agency, the Local Government Commission has teamed-up with pollution
prevention consultant, Tom Barron, to help janitors in Richmond,
CA understand the potential health risks of the products they use.
In addition to conducting free reviews of janitorial cleaning supplies,
Mr. Barron is providing purchasing managers and janitors with free
demonstrations of less toxic but equally effective alternatives.

Western Regional Pollution Prevention Network
(WRPPN)
The Western Regional Pollution Prevention Network
is a cooperative alliance of pollution prevention (P2) programs
throughout the western region. The network focuses on regional P2
issues through researching, consolidating, and disseminating P2
information. The network increases P2 effectiveness by providing
P2 programs with timely, accurate and useful information and resources.

Campaigns
Second Chance Week
Second
Chance Week is a grassroots public awareness campaign held each
October to promote reuse, repair, resale and donation opportunities
throughout California. During Second Chance Week, local governments,
community groups, reuse businesses, and other organizations work
together to hold activities geared towards giving reusable items
that might otherwise be thrown away a "second chance."
Pollution Prevention Week
Clean
Shop Tours, Award Ceremonies, Educational Fairs and Poster Contests!
All these and more are part of Pollution Prevention Week, held annually
the third week of September. Nationwide, local, state and federal
government agencies, industry associations, and others team up to
hold events that highlight and promote the benefits of pollution
prevention.
Pollution prevention (P2) is now recognized as
an effective tool for protecting the environment and the economy
since it serves to eliminate or reduce pollution at the source before
it is generated. One goal of National Pollution Prevention Week
is to make businesses and citizens more aware of opportunities they
have to prevent pollution and to provide them with the resources
and information they need to successfully implement it.
