Local Government Commission

Local Economies & Economic Development

Livable communities have strong, vibrant economies that encourage local enterprise, meet residents’ needs, and promote stable employment while also furthering social equity and environmental sustainability.

The original Ahwahnee Principles briefly address economic development; however, the Local Government Commission developed 15 auxiliary principles that specifically treat this subject. Recognizing that we can no longer afford to waste our financial, natural, and human resources, these principles offer a guide toward: establishing a sustainable standard of living and quality of life for all means recognizing the economic value of natural and human capital; taking economic, social, and environmental responsibility; and collaborating both locally and regionally to build prosperous and livable places.
