Climate change is not just another environmental issue.
Climate change is the single largest threat facing humanity, but it also provides an unprecedented opportunity for collaboration and innovation.
Industrialization, mass deforestation, and pollution have increased atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and increased the temperature of Earth’s surface, a phenomenon known as global warming. Global warming has in turn led to more frequent and prolonged droughts and extreme heat events, increased risk of wildfire, shifting precipitation patterns and extreme weather events, ocean acidification and sea level rise. These climatic changes, which threaten our public health, economic vitality, and the critical ecosystems that we all depend upon, are being experienced today by communities around the world and are projected to accelerate and worsen.
While these threats seem insurmountable, climate change presents an opportunity for communities to reimagine existing systems to create more resilient and livable communities – one that not only mitigates and adapts to climate change, but also addresses entrenched social and economic issues. We can only achieve this vision by developing creative and visionary solutions by forging new partnerships across disciplines, sectors, jurisdictional lines, and levels of governance. LGC facilitates local, regional, and statewide collaborative efforts to accelerate progress from climate awareness to implementation. We also work to advance the field of practice by conducting research and developing new tools to help local governments adapt to climate change effectively, equitably, and holistically.
