Climate change is not just another environmental issue.

LGC has played  a pivotal role in advancing California’s response to climate change. Our programs help elevate the public understanding of the risks of climate change and meaningful opportunities to increase community resiliency. To do this, we leverage our longstanding relationships with key state agencies, local jurisdictions, community-based organizations and researchers and practitioners in the field to address climate challenges.

Our work encompasses place-based projects that seek to catalyze early action and results while also building long-term capacity and statewide climate mitigation and adaptation events, policy engagement, resource development and coalition-building. We identify opportunities to help support our partners in communities that are more likely to be affected and those where resources are more scarce.

Ahwahnee Principles for Climate Change

The 1991 Ahwahnee Principles for Resource-Efficient Communities which form the basis for the Local Government Commission’s work on livable, sustainable communities provide a blueprint for elected officials to create compact, mixed-use, walkable, transit-oriented development in their local communities. The LGC also released the Ahwahnee Principles for Climate Change (PDF) in 2008.
